DESCRIPTION

Diarrhoea due to Isospora belli . Disease lasting > 4 weeks is AIDS-defining (WHO clinical stage 4).

GENERAL MEASURES

Rehydration with oral rehydration solution (ORS).

MEDICINE TREATMENT

  • Cotrimoxazole 80/400 mg, oral, 4 tablets 12 hourly for 10 days.

OR

If allergic to cotrimoxazole :

  • Ciprofloxacin, oral, 500 mg 12 hourly for 10 days.

Secondary prophylaxis:

Continue for at least 6 months and until CD4 count increases to > 200 cells/mm3 on ART

  • Cotrimoxazole 80/400, oral, 2 tablets daily.
