DESCRIPTION

Diarrhoea due to Cystoisospora belli. Disease lasting >4 weeks is AIDS-defining (WHO clinical stage 4).

GENERAL MEASURES

Rehydration with oral rehydration solution (ORS).

MEDICINE TREATMENT

  • Cotrimoxazole 160/800 mg, oral, 2 tablets 12 hourly for 10 days.

OR

If allergic to cotrimoxazole:

  • Ciprofloxacin, oral, 500 mg 12 hourly for 10 days.

Secondary prophylaxis:

Continue for at least 6 months and until CD4 count increases to >200 cells/mm3 on ART.

  • Cotrimoxazole 160/800 mg, oral daily.
