DESCRIPTION

Acute unilateral painful red eye with visual blurring and decreased corneal sensation. Characteristic dendritic corneal ulcer seen on staining with fluorescein.

MEDICINE TREATMENT

  • Aciclovir 3%, ophthalmic ointment inserted in the lower conjuntival sac five times per day at 4 hour intervals.
    • Continue for 3 days after ulcer has healed.

If aciclovir 3% ophthalmic ointment is unavailable:

  • Aciclovir, oral, 400 mg five times daily for 10–14 days.

NOTE

Topical corticosteroids are contraindicated in the treatment of dendritic ulcers.
